Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need a Virginia state inspection?

Virginia requires annual safety inspections for all registered vehicles. Your new inspection sticker will expire exactly 12 months from the inspection date, at the end of that month.

What happens if my vehicle fails inspection?

If your vehicle fails, you'll receive a rejection sticker valid for 15 days to make necessary repairs. Re-inspection within 15 days costs only $1, but you must address all failed items before receiving your approval sticker. You are allowed to drive from and or to a repair facility.

Can I drive with an expired inspection sticker?

No, driving with an expired inspection sticker can result in fines and penalties. Virginia law requires a valid inspection sticker on your windshield at all times.

Do I need an appointment for inspection?

While walk-ins are welcome, appointments ensure faster service and reduced waiting time. We especially recommend appointments during peak inspection periods at month-end.

What if I just moved to Virginia?

New Virginia residents must obtain a state inspection immediately upon registering their vehicle, regardless of inspection status in your previous state.
